Mariners 3rd grade were a new look side this week. They took the field and sat Berkley Eagles down with three outs for three batters. In reply Berkley sat Mariners down.
Three hits by Berkely and a Mariners error looked like trouble but a great infield double play got Mariners out of trouble with only one run scored. In reply a muffed fly and some good base running saw Andrew Provest bat in Mariners only run.
After walking the first batter Mariners again looked in strife but two outfield fly balls caught at Centre field and left field followed by a strikeout added a further run to the score. Mariners responded with hits by Lee Lawson and Ben Elliott with a two base hit by Stephen Pearson to bring the boys home. Mariners up by one.
A quick turn around – three up three down saw Mariners return to the plate. Mariners snuck in four runs after a couple of Eagles errors. Lee Lawson and Ben Elliott again hitting to aid the runners’ progress around the bases. Two more innings were played without an addition to the score.
Ben Elliott pitched the whole game with 56 strikes in 90 pitches and 4 strikeouts.
